Peter Greenstone's debut album, "SOMETHING", was created entirely on a Mac using Apple's Garage Band software to write, record, and mix. The album spans a number of genres, from rock to folk to classical. The only loops that were used were percussion, but still most of the percussion was "programmed".
Also at his disposal were the instruments of Jam Pack 4. Though used on many of the tracks, the last track on the album, "The Last Migration", is perhaps the most dramatic example of what can be achieved with the orchestra instruments in Jam Pack 4, composed entirely in Garage Band.
Peter Greenstone demonstrates through this album that, with creativity and a will, high-fidelity, expansively arranged, and powerful music that sounds professional can be produced using Garage Band and a simple, relatively inexpensive hardware setup. "SOMETHING" was not created for the purpose of demonstrating this; rather, these Apple tools greatly helped make the album possible by making the process easily manageable, affordable, and inspiring.
About The Album
"SOMETHING" is Peter Greenstone's debut album. As a whole, the album falls into the Rock genre but many of the tracks fall somewhere in between and across several genres, from alternative to folk to electronic to classical to world. It's an eclectic mix but there are thematic links that make the journey from track 1, Schrodinger's Cat (upbeat rock), through to track 11, The Last Migration (symphonic epic) quite cohesive.
Peter writes, performs, and produces his music by himself at his home "studio", achieving a surprisingly rich and diverse sound, using sometimes very grand arrangements but with just the right touch. Great attention is paid to the placement and purpose of each element.
Peter's lyrics are introspective and poetic, sometimes melancholy and dark, but also with a sense for irony and humor. His unique singing voice delivers emotional sincerity to the words and adds another complimentary layer to the arrangements, mesmerizing and adaptive.
"SOMETHING" was released independently December 2005 and is now available through the following sellers:
Peter has been singing and playing guitar since his teens, mostly just for his own enjoyment and for friends. By trade Peter is a 3D animation and visual effects artist, working on feature films, movie rides, commercials, and even computer games.
In 2001 Peter started taking a serious interest in writing original songs, finding a new creativity in himself. But it wasn't until 2004 that Peter discovered Garage Band and the new options that he had for composing and producing music at home, far beyond simple guitar and vocals. A new world of possibilities suddenly opened up, and he soon found that he had a natural talent for composing, arranging, and mixing, using a wide variety of instruments, live and midi.
With encouragement from the music community at MacJams.com, the tracks that would become "SOMETHING" blossomed and Peter went full-tilt into this new world of musical creativity. Now, just over one year later, his debut album is done and released.
CD Baby Review quote:
Fantastic songwriting and excellent production
Reviewer: David A. Thomas
I've had "Something" in my 5 CD changer for the last few weeks. The songwriting is really impressive. The lyrics are poetic and thoughtful; they manage to be introspective and insightful without seeming self-absorbed. Peter's singing is unique and emotive, and his backing music is always very creative and fitting, with fantastic production values. The CD art and booklet, with all of the song's lyrics, are also beautifully designed by Peter. I'm impressed that one man can single-handedly create such a professional album.
